  • Several major retailers closed stores this year as shoppers turned more to online buying. Joann Fabrics shut its 17 Arizona locations while others like Forever 21 and Party City ended operations across the country—some chains plan to reopen or keep stores open locally.  The Arizona Republic

  • Organizers Emma and Allison said guests will see live music and art exhibits at the upcoming Dark Sky Music and Arts Festival. More details about performance times and vendor locations will be shared soon.  12 News
  • Lainey Wilson launched the 2025 Whirlwind World Tour on Aug. 14 at PHX Arena downtown Phoenix—she sang hit songs like '4x4xU' and 'Watermelon Moonshine.' The show featured opening sets by Ernest and Kaitlin Butts and supported her album Whirlwind produced by Grammy winner Jay Joyce.  The Arizona Republic

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Beef prices remain at record highs due to a long cattle cycle, the 2022 drought that raised feed costs, and new tariffs that drive up import costs—USDA data shows ground beef passed $6 per pound in June 2024 with prices rising by 10.6%, and experts predict that prices will climb 5—12% through 2025. Analysts say the uncertain supply and tighter herd numbers will keep costs high for consumers.  The Arizona Republic

  • Construction for Troy Gilbert Elementary School is underway in the West Valley as the school—named to honor Major Troy Gilbert who died in combat in Iraq in 2006—is set to serve local students in the near future.  12 News

  • A storm chaser warned Maricopa residents that heavy rain may lead to flash flooding as storm conditions intensify today — local officials advise everyone to stay tuned for weather updates.  12 News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Michael, a 38-year-old Bornean orangutan at the Phoenix Zoo, is recovering today after his second surgery to remove a rare cancer that affects his sweat glands. The doctors removed extra tissue and nearby lymph nodes — and will test them soon to see if the cancer spread.  KTAR

SPORTS NEWS

  • Today, the Arizona Cardinals face the Denver Broncos at Empower Field at Mile High at 6:30 p.m. to check which players can earn playing time in key positions—cornerback, running back, and offensive line—before their final preseason game in Glendale as coaches work through roster decisions.  The Arizona Republic
