EDUCATION NEWS

  • ASU Barrett students traveled to Mexico City in March to study homelessness and help improve safety for people during the FIFA World Cup 2026—that effort involved interviews with local groups and FIFA officials and led to an action plan now under review, which will be published in December.  The Arizona Republic
  • The Arizona State Board of Education reported that most public schools earned A or B grades in the preliminary 2024-25 assessments while 13 schools—double last year’s count—received an F. Several districts in Maricopa saw changes in overall ratings, and affected schools can appeal the grades until November 17.  The Arizona Republic
  • Voters in Maricopa County cast ballots yesterday on funding measures from 21 school districts that included bond approvals and budget overrides—these measures ask for funds for new facilities, technology, and daily operations while local leaders and residents shared mixed views on spending and tax increases. Unofficial results were released Tuesday at 8 p.m. and final counts will be confirmed later.  The Arizona Republic

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Cardinals announced that Jacoby Brissett will start as quarterback against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 10, replacing Kyler Murray who is sidelined with a foot injury. Head coach Jonathan Gannon said Brissett’s strong recent performance & improved offensive play guided the decision amid long-term financial and roster considerations.  The Arizona Republic
  • Cardinals quarterback Jacoby Brissett passed for 261 yards and two touchdowns in a 27 to 17 win over the Cowboys on Monday night, breaking a five-game losing streak and fueling debate over whether he or Kyler Murray should start — Coach Jonathan Gannon said nothing changes as the team prepares for a game in Seattle later this week.  The Arizona Republic
  • The Diamondbacks are prepared to trade young position players if needed to boost pitching for their rotation and bullpen, with free agency moves like right-hander Zac Gallen declining a qualifying offer and prospects such as Lawlar, Waldschmidt, and Troy drawing interest. The team also announced J.R. House as the new third-base and catching coach—while retaining outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. despite his torn ACL and making other personnel changes.  The Arizona Republic
