- ➤ After the government shutdown suspended SNAP benefits on October 27, many residents reported skipping meals and sharing their struggles on TikTok. Local creator Edny Gonzáles and others compiled updated resource lists — including food banks and low-cost meal options — to help affected families get food. The Arizona Republic
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ Consumers and advocates say recent SRP rate hikes are expected to affect homeowners more than commercial customers—raising fears of higher monthly bills and tighter household budgets. 12 News
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Arizona State Board of Education released its 2024–25 preliminary school grades showing that 13 schools received failing marks—more than double the six that failed last year—while most schools earned A’s or B’s. Some Maricopa County districts saw grade drops and others improved, and schools can appeal their grades until Nov. 17. The Arizona Republic
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Maricopa County Parks and Recreation will waive the $7 day-use fee for all active and retired military personnel on November 11 — in celebration of Veterans Day — so they can enjoy the county's parks. Maricopa County
- ➤ SRP approved plans to convert the coal-fired Springerville Generating Station to run on natural gas. The change preserves 400 megawatts of capacity to power more than 90,000 homes and saves $45 million compared to building a new facility — it is a key part of a plan to double system capacity over the next 10 years. HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Arizona's Medicaid program, AHCCCS, helps people who meet income, residency and other criteria. Applicants can apply online, by mail or in person and must show documents (such as proof of citizenship, social security number and income) to qualify. The Arizona Republic
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ Notre Dame senior Landon Ashcraft became the first Arizona high school golfer to win three straight state titles when he shot 65 on the first day and 70 on the second day at Aguila Golf Course in Laveen on Oct. 30; his win led the Saints to their second straight Division II team championship and comes two weeks before he will sign his national letter of intent with Texas A&M. - ➤ Marvin Harrison Sr. blasted the Arizona Cardinals' offense—he said he cannot relate to its modern style and no longer attends his son's games. His comments come as his son, after 24 career games with modest numbers, works on improving his play amid concerns over the current system. The Arizona Republic
- ➤ Koa Peat, a former Perry star, scored 30 points with 7 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 steals and a block as the Wildcats edged Florida 93-87 in his debut game in Las Vegas on November 3 — proving he is ready for big games at the college level. The Arizona Republic
