ECONOMY NEWS

  • Tolleson resident Sommers Bennett has not received her unemployment checks for six weeks because a new DES unemployment system+CACTUS wrongly flagged her account for an overpayment that never happened and led to her car being repossessed. DES said they are looking into the glitch but cannot fix it until the system is updated.  KJZZ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Professor Ian Gilby at ASU oversees the Jane Goodall archive that holds over 65 years of chimp study records from Gombe—spanning Jane Goodall’s early notes to modern digitized data—to support scientists worldwide. New AI tools are being added to help researchers find key information faster.  The Arizona Republic
  • Griselda Zetino, a Mesa native who was once an undocumented student, received a transformative scholarship in summer 2007 that changed her path and led her to earn a journalism degree—she now works at Helios Education Foundation to help other students overcome similar barriers. She became a US citizen three years ago, crediting her parents' sacrifices and early support for her success.  The Arizona Republic

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Maricopa County mailed ballots with Proposition 409, asking voters to approve an 11-cent per $100 property tax increase that would raise $898 million for Valleywise Health improvements—funding to replace the nearly 50-year-old behavioral health center and double its capacity to better serve rising mental health needs. Supporters say the measure will reduce long wait times for care as the system struggles with growing demand, while few organized opponents have emerged.  KJZZ
  • An audit found that over 10 years Maricopa County and its Sheriff's Office overstated compliance costs by $163 million for a 2008 racial profiling lawsuit, which made up 72% of the $226 million assigned to the case—costs that were wrongly attributed to bypass state spending limits. The county and the agency have 35 days to respond to the audit ordered by federal judge G. Murray Snow.  The Arizona Republic

  • An expert explained how to stop lithium-ion battery fires by saying people should charge, store, and dispose of batteries properly—advice that will help local residents lower fire risks. The expert's tips will guide safe practices for handling batteries.  12 News
  • Medical experts said Arizonans should get a flu shot in October—after last winter's flu season recorded over 75,000 cases—and before the virus peaks to protect vulnerable groups and reduce severe illness.  KJZZ

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Arizona Fall League has begun its 33rd season this week in the Valley with top prospects Kevin McGonigle of the Detroit Tigers and Sebastian Walcott of the Texas Rangers—both ranked in MLB Pipeline’s top 100. The league, known as a finishing school for future major leaguers, will host games at several ballparks from Oct. 11 to Nov. 15.  The Arizona Republic
