- ➤ Popular discount grocery chain ALDI is opening its first store in Maricopa (located at North John Wayne Parkway and Honeycutt Road in Southbridge Marketplace) following a Sept. 12 permit, and the opening date has not yet been set. The Arizona Republic
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Arizona Department of Public Safety is replacing and expanding its statewide alert system—this change will help law enforcement find missing people more quickly. 12 News
- ➤ Jerry's Law—an update to animal cruelty standards signed by Gov. Hobbs—went into effect Friday to ensure local pets receive proper care and that abuse is clearly defined. KTAR
- ➤ Maricopa County now has a new law that requires dog owners to exchange contact information after a bite incident in any public or private place—this rule, amended under Senate Bill 1241 and signed by Governor Hobbs, took effect on September 26th and imposes a Class 2 Misdemeanor for violators. - ➤ Arizona lawmakers passed five new laws that will change rules for taxes, education, health, and business. Maricopa residents should see how these changes may affect them—some rules will go into effect soon. 12 News
- ➤ A state lawmaker asked for public records from Tolleson Unified High School District, and the district said it would cost $26,000 for details involving a bailout deal. Superintendent Jeremy Calles said he would sue for defamation if the requests remain unclear—he has hired a law firm to manage the response. KJZZ
- ➤ Arizona’s congressional delegation has made little progress on promised changes to benefit locals while COVID-19 vaccines are now widely available and Native American students have shown marked improvements in reading and math scores—additional updates cover tribal natural resources and business news. - ➤ On Friday, the Arizona Department of Public Safety replaced the old Silver Alert system with SAFE Alerts—an updated program that uses media channels to help find missing persons after law enforcement confirmed key safety criteria. KTAR
