Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 18th of September.
Good morning, Maricopa.
🎭 Culture
Steven Brophy, president and CEO of Aztec Land and Cattle Company, appeared on Amazing Arizonans to share how he cares for Arizona’s natural beauty and manages one of the state’s largest private landholdings—he emphasized the lasting role of cattle in local heritage.
📰 Economy
The Federal Reserve cut interest rates by a quarter point today to help a weakening job market and lower loan costs for cars, credit cards, and home mortgages (with some 30-year rates near 5.4% to just under 6%).
This move is expected to spur increased home buying and more competition in the market.
🏛️ Government
Gov. Katie Hobbs ordered flags at state buildings lowered to half-staff on Wednesday and today to honor firefighters Brenna Kulikowski and Damon Thompson—Kulikowski was honored on Wednesday and Thompson will be honored today after a car crashed head-on into an ambulance.
🏥 Health
Tony Miranda, the first Arizonan to undergo a triple transplant at Mayo Clinic in Phoenix, had surgeries on May 8 and May 9 + he was discharged over three months later and is now recovering at home.
His case marks a rare milestone in organ transplants while highlighting the importance of early flu vaccinations.
🏈 Sports
The Diamondbacks have rearranged their starting rotation for the final series—moving Nabil Crismatt to the bullpen so that Ryne Nelson, Zac Gallen, Eduardo Rodriguez, and Brandon Pfaadt will pitch in order as they chase the wild-card.
Pfaadt, who gave up five runs in 4 2/3 innings in his recent start, will try to improve his play in the game against the Giants at Chase Field.
Officials announced that the final Ironman Arizona triathlon will take place on November 16 in Tempe—rapid growth and construction along the bike course have made it hard to maintain the race, ending a 21-year run that began in 2005.
Arizona Cardinals coach Jonathan Gannon said quarterback Kyler Murray was vital to the team's 2-0 start because he threw accurately and made quick decisions during the Panthers game.
Murray made smart reads and good pocket plays—helping the team overcome a tough defense.
The Phoenix Suns have shown interest in trading for Golden State Warriors forward Jonathan Kuminga, who is in a contract extension dispute with the Warriors and would likely start for the Suns if the deal goes through — though the offer, which includes Royce O’Neale and second-round picks, faces steep odds given limited assets. Reports indicate the move remains unlikely with training camp set to begin on Sept. 30 — and the trade is still in discussion.
