CULTURE NEWS

  • Songwriter Bobby Hart — who helped write hits for the Monkees — died at his home in Los Angeles on September 15th; he was 86 and his music shaped the band's early sound.  KJZZ
  • Duran Duran will perform at PHX Arena on Jan. 5th, 2026—marking their first metro Phoenix concert since 2024. Tickets will go on sale at 10:00 a.m. Friday, Sept. 19th online.  The Arizona Republic

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A study from the American Indian Higher Education Consortium found that over 40,700 alumni of tribal colleges generated nearly $4 billion for the U.S. economy between 2022 and 2023—showing these schools have a strong economic impact. The report noted that proposed funding cuts may force some institutions, including those in Arizona, to close.  KJZZ

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Fall in Phoenix now stays hot like summer as research shows temperatures have risen nearly 3 degrees since 1970. NOAA says the forecast will be warmer and drier with a possible La Niña watch—raising risks for outdoor work and wildfires.  The Arizona Republic
  • This summer, Phoenix recorded 23 nights with lows in the 90s—more than triple the typical seven nights, according to National Weather Service data. Arizona State Climatologist Erinanne Saffell links the rise to human-caused climate change and urban heat, and officials warn that hotter nights could increase health risks.  KJZZ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lawyers for Arizona inmates said they asked Senior U.S. District Judge Roslyn Silver to appoint a receiver to manage prison healthcare for over 35,000 inmates—progress remains slow despite increased spending and staffing upgrades. State attorneys argued they need more time to meet the court’s mandates and improve care.  KJZZ
  • On Monday, Gov. Hobbs signed an executive order to quicken permits for new electricity projects—she directed state agencies to identify federal funds and streamline land leases while setting up a task force to explore advanced energy technology. Attorney General Mayes opposed APS’s proposed 14% rate hike for next year—arguing the utility’s monopoly should not burden consumers.  KJZZ
  • The Arizona Supreme Court voided a 2021 law that gave doctors protection from negligence claims during the COVID-19 outbreak, saying the state constitution guarantees the right to recover damages from injuries. The ruling applies only to cases from emergencies that began in March 2020 and lasted for about two years.  KJZZ
  • Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes was granted an intervention by the Arizona Corporation Commission on Monday—letting the state offer testimony—to contest APS’s plan for a 14% rate hike that would raise customer bills by about $20.  KTAR
  • On Sept. 10, Arizona took over regulating injection wells from the EPA to better manage water supply, copper mining and carbon capture—state officials said local control now addresses groundwater needs more effectively.  The Arizona Republic
  • Maricopa County projects that taxpayer costs from a long-running racial profiling lawsuit against the Sheriff’s Office will hit $350 million next year. A monitor today is verifying the figure — if records do not support the estimate, an independent public finance expert may be assigned.  KJZZ
  • Maricopa County voters will decide on a $900 million bond to expand Valleywise Health in November—this measure will fund upgrades for local health centers. If approved, the bond will help improve health services for residents.  12 News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Arizona State University professor Ken Buetow is working with Mayo Clinic, MIT, Stanford and other institutions to study how tumors change and resist treatment. His project focuses on breast, colon and lung cancers and will use new technology to predict tumor evolution—guiding future therapies.  KJZZ

SPORTS NEWS

  • Arizona State linebacker Jordan Crook was named Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week after he recorded 12 tackles, 3.5 tackles for a loss and a sack in the Sun Devils' 34-15 win over Texas State on Sept. 13 at Mountain America Stadium — he helped hold Texas State’s top rushing offense to 119 yards on 42 carries.  The Arizona Republic
