  • 17-year-old June Shaver collapsed from heatstroke while walking home from Dysart High School in El Mirage early in the school year—paramedics recorded her temperature at 107 degrees and she suffered burns that required five surgeries and nearly 29 days in the hospital before returning home on Aug 30 with a recovery expected to last up to 18 months.  The Arizona Republic

  • Erin Hume, a valley mother, was stabbed over 20 times at home by her alleged ex-boyfriend — her son called 911, and she is recovering.  12 News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Frank Camacho, a trailblazing Mexican American reporter who paved the way for Latin voices in local media, died at 75 as his family announced his passing on August 29—his legacy guides new journalists in the area.  The Arizona Republic

  • Gov. Katie Hobbs said yesterday that Chase Field needs improvements — she stressed that the state must have the Diamondbacks remain in Phoenix.  The Arizona Republic

HEALTH NEWS

  • Federal hospital ratings show that five Arizona hospitals earned a five-star rating among 53 Medicare-certified facilities—Mayo Clinic in Phoenix, Mercy Gilbert, Phoenix VA, Regional Medical Center in Goodyear, and VA Health System in Prescott—while no hospital received the one-star rating given to 233 hospitals nationally.  The Arizona Republic
