- ➤ Attorney General Kris Mayes said a Maricopa County judge took millions in assets from a couple accused of tricking homeowners by promising to save them from foreclosure but secretly making them sign over their homes to fake companies—she warned that many similar scams are still active and urged homeowners to use trusted real estate agents. - ➤ Arizona Superintendent Tom Horne is asking the state Supreme Court for the power to enforce Proposition 203 which requires four hours daily of English-only instruction for language learners—he also seeks permission to sue Gov. Katie Hobbs and AG Kris Mayes for supporting dual language programs. KJZZ
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Ryan Thornell, Arizona’s director of corrections, is set to testify before lawmakers today after touting new safety measures following three inmate deaths in April in Tucson. His department gave guards body cameras in May — and will launch a violence reduction workgroup this month to reduce contraband and improve safety. KJZZ
- ➤ The Arizona Corporation Commission plans to roll back a rule that required utilities to get 15% of their power from clean sources for nearly 20 years—Attorney General Kris Mayes warned the move could push utilities to use more natural gas and raise costs for customers. The commission defends its decision by saying the free market will guide energy choices as demand grows. KJZZ
