ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A person died after a wrong-way crash on SR-202 near Center Parkway—officials said the Arizona Department of Public Safety reported the incident.  12 News

CRIME NEWS

  • A police report released on Aug. 7 showed that Trigg Kiser drowned in a backyard pool on May 18 after falling from an inflatable chair when his father lost sight of him while watching a playoff game and placing a bet, and although investigators recommended a child-abuse charge, prosecutors did not file charges.  The Arizona Republic

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Federal officials will release a 2026 operating plan on Aug. 15th that shows how much Colorado River water Arizona must give up, and state water officials say current cuts will hold until at least 2027—further reductions may come if reservoir levels do not improve after a dry winter.  The Arizona Republic
  • Arizona public universities and the Board of Regents are working on a project to capture rainfall and runoff so more water fills the aquifers. The Regents’ Grant will fund advanced modeling using machine learning—providing new data to improve water reliability amid growing drought concerns.  KJZZ

  • Matt Giordano took office yesterday as the Phoenix Police Department's first permanent chief in three years. He brings over 20 years of experience and aims to build community trust — with a formal swearing-in set later this month.  KTAR
  • Project S.A.F.E. teaches firearm safety to youths in the juvenile justice system in Maricopa; officials say online lessons and in-person mentoring help first-time gun offense probationers build a better future + early program completion may allow students to end their probation sooner.  KJZZ
  • Residents of Wittmann submitted a letter of intent to incorporate and protest BNSF’s planned rail hub, which is expected to bring heavy traffic, noise, and pollution to their quiet area northwest of downtown Phoenix. The incorporation effort—coordinated by Keep Us Rural LLC—will begin collecting signatures after a public notification period to keep local control in Wittmann.  KTAR

  • Fishmasters has released a list of 15 top fishing spots in Arizona and named Roosevelt Lake as the best due to its long shoreline and many fish options — including bass, trout and catfish — offering local anglers a favorite weekend adventure.  The Arizona Republic
