  • Filmmaker Adam Finberg from Phoenix has released his film Star People, now in theaters, which looks at the 1997 Phoenix Lights incident through the story of two siblings whose lives changed that night. The film shows how Finberg uses his long interest in strange lights and personal struggles to tell a unique tale+ sparking new talks about the mystery.  KJZZ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A study by CashNetUSA compared prices for 52 school supply items at 26 chains and found Walmart offered the lowest total cost at $105.88 while Safeway and Albertsons charged much more. The report, which used pricing data from March, also provided tips for shoppers+ such as making a list and checking prices to save money for the new school year.  The Arizona Republic

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes has opened an investigation into Thin Blue Line Benefits Association after state regulators accused the group of unlawfully providing insurance—members paid nearly $5.9 million in premiums while some faced steep out-of-pocket costs. The organization was originally set up for retired first responders who did not qualify for Medicare.  12 News
  • Four Apache women filed a suit in Washington, D.C. on July 24 to stop a land exchange that would allow a copper mine at Oak Flat, a sacred site about 60 miles east of Phoenix. The suit claims it violates religious rights and environmental laws — a judge will hear arguments in a separate case next week.  The Arizona Republic

  • Realtor Clayton Wolfe finished his decade-long quest to complete the 7 Summits challenge last week after climbing Mt. Elbrus in Russia on July 24 — his journey that started in 2019 saw him raise funds for local charities, and he plans to attempt the Explorer’s Grand Slam in the future. This achievement marks a milestone in his climbing career and community efforts.  KTAR

  • Today, the Phoenix Mercury face the Indiana Fever at 4 p.m. on Family 3TV as the Fever rule out star Caitlin Clark for a fifth straight game due to a right groin injury sustained on July 15 — the Fever have won their last two games with Kelsey Mitchell averaging 20.2 points and center Aliyah Boston adding 15.4 — and the Mercury, coming off a 1-1 start to their road trip, aim to build momentum.  The Arizona Republic
