CRIME NEWS

  • A Phoenix man filed a federal lawsuit against the city and four officers, alleging they pressed him against hot concrete last summer and caused third-degree burns that led to over 30 days of hospital treatment—his next hearing is set for Oct 1.  The Arizona Republic
  • A man was extradited from Mexico City and booked into Maricopa County Jail on Friday after he reportedly kidnapped his two noncustodial children during a supervised visit six years ago + he now faces charges including kidnapping, molestation of a minor, sexual exploitation, child abuse, and unlawful flight to avoid prosecution.  KTAR

CULTURE NEWS

  • This July, Arizona sky watchers will see three meteor showers—the Alpha Capricornids, Perseids and Delta Aquariids—with peak activity on the nights of July 29 and 30 and recommended viewing between midnight and dawn from dark sites outside metropolitan Phoenix. Observers should travel to areas with clear skies to best enjoy the celestial display.  The Arizona Republic

  • Arizona law allows driving barefoot—however, public safety officials warn that going without shoes can reduce pedal control and increase risk on hot asphalt if a vehicle breaks down or a collision occurs. Officials suggest wearing footwear while driving to help ensure a safe and quick reaction during emergencies.  The Arizona Republic
  • U.S. Rep. Greg Stanton said the federal government should boost low income energy aid and develop resilient infrastructure to help residents cope with extreme heat. He urged new OSHA guidelines—ensuring regular breaks, cold water and shade—so outdoor workers can be better protected from high temperatures.  KTAR
  • Sen. Mark Kelly said extreme heat is a crisis and urged leaders from many groups to work together on ways to protect people—he expects a shared community effort to face rising temperatures.  The Arizona Republic
