CRIME NEWS

  • Timothy James Wood, 36, was accused of holding a woman captive in a Phoenix backyard shed for about two weeks and abusing her, while court records show he once pleaded guilty to aggravated assault in 2007 and was imprisoned in 2010 for domestic violence violations — he now faces charges of kidnapping, sexual assault, and aggravated assault.  The Arizona Republic
  • Officials reported that the Hyundai Elantra is the most stolen car in Arizona due to its lack of an immobilizer—thieves easily target similar models, prompting experts to advise owners to install anti-theft devices like tracking systems or steering wheel locks.  The Arizona Republic
  • Early Friday morning, a hit-and-run accident killed a woman and her dog when two separate cars struck them and the drivers left the scene — police are investigating the incident.  12 News

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Both APS and SRP recorded their highest ever energy demand on Wednesday when temperatures hit 118 degrees — APS reached 8,527 MW between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. and SRP delivered 8,324 MW between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. APS’s record load exceeded its forecast of 8,491 MW as extreme heat drove air conditioners to work overtime across the Valley.  KJZZ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office is now using X-ray body-scanning technology to stop drugs and contraband from being smuggled into jails. Deputy Chief Michael Dawson said the scanners will work with pat-down searches—serving as probable cause for more invasive screening.  KJZZ
  • On Thursday, Gov. Katie Hobbs joined tribal leaders to announce Turquoise Alerts will be used immediately for missing Indigenous persons — even though the law is set to take effect in September. The alert system is designed to fill a safety gap in tribal communities.  KJZZ

  • Brennen McHenry, a record-setting jumper from Brophy Prep, has transferred from Texas to ASU to compete in high jump, long jump, and the 100-meter dash as he recovers from a knee injury + he said returning home fulfills a lifelong dream and boosts his hopes for a strong track season.  The Arizona Republic
