CRIME NEWS

  • Two men were sentenced in Phoenix for a May bus stop shooting where over two dozen shots were fired and a stray bullet hit a car, injuring a 6-month-old baby with a fractured skull while the victim returned fire; Miguel Ceja received 21 years and Zackary Carrillo received 10.5 years in prison.  12 News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The U.S. Bureau of Land Management approved Rattler Resources’ gold mine project on 330 acres near Wickenburg, which will allow the company to mine gold-bearing gravel in the Rogers Wash area. The project will dig pits and trenches up to 50 feet deep in two phases over up to 10 years — with rules in place to lessen harm to water, wildlife and air.  12 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • ARIZONA@WORK Maricopa County has extended its weekday service hours until 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday so job seekers can access career counseling and job search help after 5 p.m. The program is running a 6-month trial at West Valley Career Center—staff voluntarily adjusted their schedules to avoid additional hiring and improve service access.  Maricopa County
  • Maricopa County provided $766,648 in CDBG funding that enabled the Arizona Fire and Medical Authority to upgrade the Tonopah Fire Station with a backup generator, new well system, and perimeter fencing—improvements that now help first responders serve a 300-square-mile area with many low- or moderate-income residents. The project ran from December 2024 to May and has improved emergency service reliability in the area.  Maricopa County

HEALTH NEWS

  • A local doctor advises Maricopa residents to prevent heat-related illness by staying hydrated, wearing light clothing, and limiting outdoor activities when temperatures peak+ he noted that the harsh Arizona summer heat requires careful preparation.  12 News

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • La Esperanza Terrace is a new 96-unit affordable housing complex built on 3.45 acres of former Isaac School District land that began preleasing in March and is expected to reach full occupancy by May. The project—developed through a School District Surplus Land Initiative that united Maricopa County, the City of Phoenix, and local partners—will offer 30 years of affordable housing for households earning 60% of the county’s median income.  Maricopa County

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Phoenix Suns selected Duke freshman Khaman Maluach with the 10th overall pick on June 25 in Brooklyn. They acquired the pick from Houston in the Kevin Durant trade—where the deal also sent Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks, and additional selections—and later traded the 29th pick and a future selection to Charlotte for center Mark Williams.  The Arizona Republic
