BUSINESS NEWS

  • Aldi stores in Arizona are cutting prices on over 400 seasonal products starting June 5 through Labor Day to ease rising grocery bills—discounts may reach up to 33% off on items like meat and produce. The discount promotion comes as Aldi plans to grow its presence in the Valley, including a new location at Avalon Ranch in Mesa.  The Arizona Republic

CRIME NEWS

  • Two Phoenix-area men, Abran Villa Jr. and Jose Sarinana, face a federal assault charge after they followed ICE agents in Chandler on June 1—Villa revved his truck and blocked an agent while Sarinana chased another vehicle, and a federal magistrate ordered them held in custody with a June 10 hearing.  The Arizona Republic

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Recent June rainfall increased mosquito activity in the Valley and Chase Golightly will report any new developments as conditions change.  12 News
  • ASU researcher Kathryn Sorensen warned that central Arizona cities must develop a Plan B as the Colorado River's water supply dwindled, putting pressure on communities like Buckeye that lack alternative sources. Cities such as Phoenix and Tucson relied on pipelines and groundwater while tribes and water markets remained part of future strategies to manage the shortage.  The Arizona Republic

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Emilie Kiser filed a lawsuit on May 27 to block public release of records after her 3-year-old son drowned in the family’s Chandler backyard pool, saying that making the documents public would add to the family’s grief. Maricopa County Superior Court issued an interim order on June 3 that stops officials from sharing records like the police report and 911 call while the case continues—some agencies have already been dismissed from the suit.  The Arizona Republic

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Arizona Wildcats lost 18-2 to North Carolina on June 6 and now face elimination in the NCAA baseball tournament as they prepare for a must-win Game 2 today at 9 a.m. MST in Chapel Hill — a win will send them to a decisive Game 3 on June 8.  The Arizona Republic
  • The Phoenix Suns hired Cleveland Cavaliers assistant Jordan Ott as head coach and he now must build a new coaching staff from candidates—Suns assistant David Fizdale, former Knicks assistants Mark Bryant and Othella Harrington, Adam Caporn, Phil Handy, Adam Harrington, Brent Barry, and Jenny Boucek—who may help the team play better next season.  The Arizona Republic
