  • Maricopa County’s updated Point it Time results show a 3% rise in homelessness compared to last year—official analysis on the findings is expected in the coming weeks.  12 News
  • Economic issues may be behind a rise in dog abandonments in metro Phoenix—animal advocates say West Valley residents have been forced to leave their pets when evictions occur. Tammy Johnson of You Rescued Me said she called Maricopa County Animal Care and Control to rescue eight dogs abandoned in Buckeye due to a lack of law enforcement follow-up.  KTAR

  • Professional photographer Meghan Beadnell, a new Gilbert resident, recounted her nearly fatal hiking ordeal near Camp Creek Waterfall when she and a friend got lost in 103 degree heat and their phones died—she deployed her drone to locate transmission towers that guided them safely back home.  12 News

CRIME NEWS

  • Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office detectives found two teenagers dead off SR 87 between Mesa and Payson during the early morning hours of May 27—one victim has been identified as 18-year-old Pandora Kjolsrud as investigators work to solve the homicide.  The Arizona Republic

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Compudopt offers a free adult literacy program in partnership with Google Fiber—Michelle Kari and Will Novak explained on 12News that the new classes will help adults build essential reading and writing skills. The program will start soon.  12 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Emilie Kiser filed a lawsuit on May 27 to stop officials from releasing public records—including the police report, 911 call, and scene photos—after her 3-year-old son Trigg drowned accidentally at their home in Chandler on May 18 as she seeks privacy amid growing media attention.  The Arizona Republic

SPORTS NEWS

  • Arizona State baseball earned its first NCAA Tournament berth in four years after a season of close games and steady improvement—coach Willie Bloomquist said the win was emotional for players like Jacob Tobias. The third seeded Sun Devils will face UC Irvine at 6 p.m. MST today in the Los Angeles Regional at the familiar Jackie Robinson Stadium.  The Arizona Republic
