EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Maricopa Community College District governing board approved Steven Bloomberg (former chancellor of Kern Community College District) as the new leader after Steven Gonzales’s six-year tenure. Gonzales, who last year requested state funding to support operating costs, said the funding gap forced tough budget decisions.  KJZZ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A report from Headwaters Economics shows that Arizona, New Mexico, Idaho and Wyoming still lack a statewide wildfire building code while Colorado approved a code last year that will be enforced this year to help protect homes.  KJZZ
  • Maricopa County is launching a pilot program today to help Phoenix residents avoid eviction in high-risk zip codes by partnering with justice courts, landlords and community groups.  12 News
  • The U.S. House approved $5 million on May 26 to fund mobile medical units for Native American veterans as part of a bipartisan effort led by Arizona Reps. Greg Stanton and Eli Crane— a move to bring care closer to veterans who previously traveled long distances for VA services.  KJZZ
  • APS has proposed a formula rate (meant to simplify future rate adjustments) but any increase must still be approved by the Arizona Corporation Commission, and some customers worry it will limit public input as APS seeks a 14% rate hike.  KJZZ

HEALTH NEWS

  • Red Cross volunteers visited a North Phoenix mobile home community (dedicated to seniors) on May 9 to share heat safety tips amid rising extreme heat risks. Data show nearly 25% of Maricopa County's indoor heat-related deaths occur in such housing, underlining vulnerable conditions from outdated insulation and high cooling costs.  KJZZ

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Harkins Theatres has revived its Summer Movie Fun program for kids 13 and under. Starting Monday, June 1, families can buy a season pass for eight movies at 9:45 a.m. on weekdays through July 24 for $8 (adult attendance requires a child), available at the box office and online.  The Arizona Republic

  • Arizona Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte was named National League Player of the Week after posting a .536 average, 3 homers, and 12 RBI — his strong performance came during the week of May 18-24. He joins teammate Ildemaro Vargas as one of two D-backs honored this season.  12 News
