  • Maricopa County authorities sentenced Shannon Lee Smith to nearly nine years in prison and ordered her to repay almost $300,000—she fraudulently used another woman's identity to obtain medical care from Banner Desert Medical Center and other providers between September 2022 and March 2024.  The Arizona Republic
  • In a Maricopa County courtroom on Friday, the mother of 49-year-old Jake Kelly—who died after a brutal beating in 2023—told Judge Tracy Nadzieja that defendant Angel Mullooly made a horrible mistake and did not need a longer term than the eight-year sentence he received.  12 News

  • The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office warned lakegoers to follow safety rules ahead of Memorial Day weekend after reporting two drowning deaths, over 100 wake zone violations, and several boating arrests for DUI and reckless operation at county lakes. Officials said children under 12 must wear life jackets and volunteer crews with cooling stations and medical support will be ready—helping families stay safe as heat and water risks rise.  KTAR

  • Diamondbacks pitcher Scott McGough, 35, returned to the majors after a tough 2024 season by changing his grip on his slider and splitter with coach Brian Kaplan’s help, and he aided a win over the Dodgers on May 19.
