GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Arizona lawmakers advanced a bill that lets Maricopa County voters decide whether to renew the jail tax that pays for jail construction, maintenance, and operation. The one-fifth cent tax raised $270 million in 2024—expires in 2027 and may be reduced by county supervisors before Gov. Hobbs considers the bill. KJZZ
- ➤ Tomorrow, a U.S. District judge in Phoenix will hear Apache Stronghold’s plea to stop the federal government from completing a land swap for a copper mine at Oak Flat—an area considered sacred by local Native communities east of Phoenix. The group asks that work be delayed until the Supreme Court reviews a related religious rights case. The Arizona Republic
- ➤ Real ID enforcement for domestic travel begins May 7, so travelers must present a Real ID or an acceptable alternative such as a passport — those without a Real ID will face extra screening at TSA checkpoints. The Arizona Department of Transportation advises applying for the Arizona Travel ID at least two weeks before flying to avoid delays. The Arizona Republic
