Good morning, Maricopa. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 1st of April.

The event underscored ongoing efforts to protect more than 94,000 temporary and migrant workers who support the state’s agriculture.  The Arizona Republic

CULTURE NEWS

  • After the Maricopa County Community College District canceled its cultural graduation ceremonies to avoid losing federal funding, the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community will hold a convocation for Native American graduates. Tribal president Martin Harvier said the ceremony is planned to honor students and show the tribe’s disagreement with the cancellation—an action he called the right thing to do.  KJZZ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Maricopa educators at West-MEC addressed the shortage of veterinary workers by offering a veterinary science program that trains students to care for domestic, exotic and large animals—students gained hands-on experience in the center's clinic and had opportunities for further training with Mesa Community College and Pima Medical Institute.  KJZZ

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Arizona fire officials said that federal funding cuts have not affected wildfire mitigation efforts as the state prepares for a busy wildfire season—23,000 acres have been treated since last July and 30,000 acres will be cleared by the end of June. Leaders stressed that maintaining staffing is key—residents are urged to remove dead vegetation to lessen fire risks during a dry winter.  KJZZ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Arizona legislators considered a bill to raise the minimum age to buy tobacco to 21 so that state law aligns with the federal standard. If approved, 18-year-olds who buy tobacco will face a petty offense — lawmakers debated the proposal with some supporting it to protect minors while others argued that rights like voting should allow them to smoke.  KJZZ
  • Last week, the Central Arizona Wildland Response Team—including Phoenix area fire departments and other agencies—trained to handle structure fires and wildfires. They practiced water-pumping operations, sand table exercises and radio communications drills and will hold additional sessions statewide to keep crews ready after a dry winter.  KJZZ

HEALTH NEWS

  • Maricopa County health officials reported that over $190M in federal funding cuts have led to uncertainty and expected layoffs for local public health programs. A memo in Pima County revealed that at least 22 positions were cut and several services like vaccine clinics and NARCAN education may be interrupted — officials are still assessing the overall impact.  KJZZ

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • In 2024, landlords in Maricopa County filed a record 87,130 eviction cases—averaging more than 238 a day—as rising rents and job losses made keeping up with payments difficult for many families.
