CRIME NEWS

  • 45 year old Marcus Freiberger was last heard from on February 21 & his family was notified of his death Monday & he had been missing for a month.  12 News
  • The San Carlos Apache Tribe asked state officials to tighten group home rules after 14-year-old Emily Pike left a Mesa facility on January 27th and was murdered when her dismembered remains were found on February 14th; the tribe has urged Governor Hobbs and Attorney General Kris Mayes to investigate current standards and support a bill for a missing Indigenous person alert system — it also offers a $75,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.  12 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Hobbs accepted the 22 tribal flags removed from a Phoenix VA hospital on March 20 from the Salt River Indian Community near Scottsdale—she announced on March 25 that the flags will be displayed in the Executive Tower rotunda at the Capitol until VA policy changes allow their return to the hospital.  The Arizona Republic
  • U.S. Reps. Greg Stanton and Yassamin Ansari called on the Department of Defense on Monday to restore the tribal service member stories of Marine Ira Hayes and Army Specialist Lori Ann Piestewa to its website — they say the restoration honors Native American veterans' dedicated service.  KTAR
  • On March 21, Gov. Katie Hobbs ordered a delay in enforcing cage-free chicken farming rules to help lower egg prices amid an ongoing avian flu outbreak; the change postpones the law, originally set to start in January 2027, by seven years (aiming to ease rising grocery costs).  The Arizona Republic
  • The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is set to decide soon whether to delay upgrading Phoenix’s ozone nonattainment status as rising air pollution raises concerns about public health and local economic impacts. EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin said discussions with state and local leaders have made the issue a top priority, and if the decision favors a delay, officials will have more time before stricter permitting begins on May 17—though critics warn that short-term relief may not solve long-term pollution challenges.  The Arizona Republic

  • Arizonans in Maricopa are facing tough allergies this spring as high ragweed and tree pollen levels cause sneezing, runny nose+itchy eyes and congestion; Mayo Clinic's Dr. Rank advises early treatment+using over-the-counter medicines and consultations to lessen impacts on sleep and work.  The Arizona Republic

  • Kanye Udoh, a 6 foot, 215 pound running back from Army, transferred to ASU to fill the gap left by Cam Skattebo and rushed for 1,117 yards last season as he quickly received calls from several schools before choosing ASU. ASU coach Shaun Aguano said Udoh shows professionalism — he processes plays quietly and brings a calm influence to the team.  The Arizona Republic
  • Someburros will bring authentic Sonoran flavors to Chase Field starting tomorrow as part of the new D-backs season by serving a menu with burritos, tacos, and stadium nachos.
