  • Oak Flat, a 2,400-acre Apache holy land on the National Register, stays open to the public despite its transfer to Resolution Copper. The company has hired local San Carlos staff to manage the campgrounds — future mining work may lead to a new campsite if the area is permanently altered.  KJZZ

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Rainbow Cone is set to open its first Arizona location in Surprise near Litchfield and Waddell roads on March 30 — with the first 100 visitors receiving a free treat. The Chicago-based shop has served its signature stacked cones since 1926.  KJZZ

CULTURE NEWS

  • The inaugural SkyFire Environmental Film Festival debuts this weekend with nearly 100 environmental documentaries showing in Phoenix, Tempe and Mesa. The event offers free light rail passes provided by Valley Metro to help visitors explore the venues + discuss sustainability.  KJZZ
  • Arizona America250 Commission, led by former lawmaker Laura Terech, is touring all 15 counties with a travelling museum that features an exact replica of the Liberty Bell to mark the nation’s 250th anniversary. Maricopa residents can soon enjoy a celebration of state history & civic pride.  KJZZ

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Maricopa residents have seen rising gas prices as 40 to 45% of our fuel comes from California, where higher taxes and long transport increase costs; March data shows regular gas costing about $4.46 in Arizona + $5.66 in California.  The Arizona Republic

  • Arizona Treasurer Kimberly Yee and school choice advocates call for reforms to the Empowerment Scholarship Account program after a 12News investigation exposed millions in questionable spending. Today she directed her office to invite new vendor proposals to tighten oversight and prevent improper online purchases.  12 News

  • Federal regulators ruled Monday that pollution from Mexico — not local sources — is causing Phoenix to miss federal air quality standards; local businesses noted they cut 70% of emissions since 1990 and praised the decision.   KTAR
