GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Short-term rental operators and an anti-STR group held events on Feb. 4 at the Capitol to oppose proposed restrictions including a $3.50 fee aimed at funding utility assistance; both sides said out-of-state investors are pushing up housing costs.  KJZZ
  • The Arizona Corporation Commission cleared a key hurdle on Feb. 4 by approving the environmental certificate for Project Baccara near Surprise. The planned project (a 700-megawatt gas-fired power plant for a data center) still needs approvals from Maricopa County and Luke Air Force Base.  The Arizona Republic

SPORTS NEWS

  • Arizona free agent pitcher Zac Gallen, who spent seven seasons with the Diamondbacks, said Tuesday, Feb. 3, at the WM Phoenix Open that he would love to return—citing local fan support and his ties to Phoenix—as he remains deeply connected to the team.  The Arizona Republic
  • The Phoenix Suns begin their four-game homestand today at Mortgage Matchup Center against the Warriors despite key injuries on both teams. Devin Booker is ruled out with a right ankle sprain and Jalen Green is questionable, while the Warriors miss key players including Stephen Curry.  The Arizona Republic
  • Mesquite coach Candice Gonzales was named head coach of the West team for the McDonald’s All-American game on March 31 at Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale; she reached 500 wins with Mesquite over a year ago and becomes the third Arizona coach selected for the event.  The Arizona Republic
  • Yesterday, the Arizona Cardinals hired Nathaniel Hackett as offensive coordinator after coach Mike LaFleur held a news conference, retaining play-calling duties himself. Hackett brings experience from roles with multiple teams+ his background is expected to boost the offense.  The Arizona Republic
